Mountain paths above the white village

Fifteen minutes from the coast and you are in another world. From Istán and Altos de Istán, old mule paths wind up through pine and olive groves into the Sierra de las Nieves, with the white village below and the sea glittering at the horizon. Our favourite way to start a day.

What

Waymarked trails of all lengths, from an easy hour along the Río Molinos to half-day climbs towards the Sierra de las Nieves peaks. Bring water and good shoes — the views do the rest.

Where

Start from Istán village or from Altos de Istán, about 15 minutes up the mountain road from the Golden Mile.

How long

Anything from one hour to a full day, depending on the trail.
